Not are fillers are good. Some suffers from lack of logic like: Ginyu Force vs Z Senshi Yamcha vs Olibu |

The worst was when they learned to drive and Piccolo had this ridiculous outfit on... Jesus christ... This is why I bought all the manga. An informed decision I made when I was like nine or ten. That's how bad the filler is. |

Most filler arcs and whole episode fillers are good, in my opinion. The Other World tournament is my personal favorite, since it shows a bit of what Goku did in the otherworld (that for some reason wasn't shown in the manga at all) and introduces Paikuhan, one of the most interesting Toei-created characters. I also love the filler between the Red Ribbon Arc and the 22nd Budokai, that gives some extra backstory in Goku's and Tenshinhan's backstory. What they screw up is the in episode filler, the filler that is inserted in the canon parts of the anime. It's overly long and most of the times it defies logic. The Freeza fight is a great example. In the manga it shows Goku simply overpowering Freeza and showing him that he is not the best, that was truly the purpose of Super Saiyan in that arc. In the anime the thing is overly long, they fight evenly for a long time, Gohan goes back to try to help, they stop during full minutes just staring at each other, etc. This kind of thing ruins the pacing, and that's why i prefer the manga most of the times: the pacing. The only fights that actually gained something with this kind of filler were Vegeta vs. Goku (Boo arc) and Gohan vs. Gotenks-Boo. Other than that, it just kinda ruins the pacing. If Toei wanted to fluff the filler, it would actually be better to create some more filler arcs like the Other World tournament. |

Filler is tolerable when,it doesn't interrupt the story in progress. The driving episode was hilarious, as DB once was. Cutting away to show 5 minutes of characters talking or reacting, then showing one or two punches or a small staredown, repeat is annoying. I can barely watch the Frieza vs Goku fight because of it. As others have said, cutting away to show Hercule shouting "It's a trick!" after Every. Single. Ki blast is annoying. What's even more annoying is that some of it isn't filler. I think cutting away is DBZ's biggest problem. It's like Headbanger's Ball: in order to see some Kreator or Candlemass, you had to sit through hours of Cinderella, Tesla, Bulletboys, Winger, etc. It was okay early on, but by the Boo saga, man was it out of control! And the craziest part about it is all of humanity's dead, who else do we need to see talk about what the Z fighters are doing? Edited by Yuli Ban, Jan 20 2014, 02:41 PM.

Dbz is the only series I don't mind filler. I enjoyed most of it especially the filler fights and filler added to transformations. Goku and piccolo driving was pretty funny. Otherworld tournament was awesome. I actually prefer to sometimes call the filler just bonus scenes lol. There are series like bleach. Half of bleach is filler and it's horrible filler

Nah, I like all of the fillers. Although I agree a lot of them seems to be way off the original story of the manga, such as Gokus driving lessons, but in overall I really enjoy watching most of them .

The problem only really arises when people try to use them as canon sources. Look at Naruto, where part one was just about killed the IP on American TV syndication because there were close to 100 filler episodes all crammed together. No canon pieces to break the flow. There were a few episodes that felt like they could be a part of the canon and actually felt serious, but most of the time, it was low-quality slapstick. Bleach suffers from the same problem: there are whole segments of the series dedicated to filler. In DBZ, as aforementioned, there's a little filler here, and little there, and when you add it all up it's about the same as it was in Naruto or Bleach, but you wouldn't realize it because it was mainly "3 canon episodes for every one filler episode." Most filler was either within canon episodes, or received their own episodes, but very rarely whole sagas and, when they did, the sagas tended to be enjoyable and, more importantly, *short*, i.e. Garlic Jr's revenge, Other World Tournament, 10 Days to Cell Games, etc. |

I think an example of filler not being useless is the training Goku does in 100x gravity. A lot of it deals with likely scenarios that would happen if he was training under that kind of pressure and not used to it...granted some of it is in the manga but a good majority of it isn't...I think it shows us how intense his training really is. Most filler is pointless though at least in my opinion. I really enjoyed the Garlic Jr. saga...it feels plausible enough to have happened in the series and I enjoyed seeing Gohan and Piccolo save the Earth without Goku's help. |
